About the Hornby R751 Class 37 D 6830 model
Originally released by Hornby in 1968 in the BR blue livery (previously released in a green livery) this model was manufactured up until 1976, from where the model was re-numbered 37130. The chassis and motor was updated by Hornby in 1978 for future models.
This model was sold on Ebay as a non-runner. An initial track test confirmed this.
A first look over
The casing is complete with one very small ding near the middle and the yellow nose paint is scuffed in several places, but otherwise complete.

Looking at the motor, its plain that something has gone wrong, as the pickups have been floating about in the case. One of the brushes are missing as the brush retaining clip has sprung and the insulator is gone. The fixing screw for the pickups is very loose.
Most of this was easily put back together, but cleaning and parts were needed before testing with power. Pictures below show it re-assembled as far as possible.

An exterior clean
The casing was removed and given a light going over with a soft toothbrush and warm water.
Repairs
So the unit was given a thorough cleaning with meths and the new brushes were fitted along with a new insulating sleeve for the brush retention spring.
This all seemed to go well, so on to the testing.
Testing
The unit was placed on a track and immediately power was applied, the motor operated. Testing in both directions, the motor works perfectly, however the motor gears are skimming over the wheel gears, which it turns out are badly worn. The wheels at the non-driven end are dropping into the bogie frame, so repairs are needed here too so it is going nowhere at the moment.
Costs
Model purchase cost from Ebay: £14.50 plus P&P. (Listed as for parts) - came along with two well used mark 2 carriages.
X67 brushes from Ebay: (Peter's Spares) £4.99 plus P&P
Looking into new drive wheel gears, these are coming in around £5 each plus postage.
With this cost and a possible bogie replacement, this model truly becomes a parts only item.
